The Blood Biochemistry Profile examines the plasma, the liquid component of blood after red and white blood cells have been removed, for enzymes, proteins and trace elements. These tests may indicate which organ system such as the liver or kidneys may not be functioning properly. The Alanine Aminotransferase test (ALT test) measures the level of the enzyme ALT in your blood. ALT is an enzyme made in the liver cells and the level of ALT in the blood can help evaluate liver function. The Alkaline Phosphatase level test (ALP test) measures the amount of alkaline phosphatase enzyme in your blood that is produced mainly in the liver and in bone. The alkaline phosphatase test (ALP) is used to help detect bone disorders or liver disease. The Aspartate Aminotransferase (AST) test measures the amount of this enzyme in the blood and is an indicator of heart or liver disease. AST is usually found in the heart, liver, muscles, kidneys and the brain and is released when any one of these organs suffers damage. The Calcium blood test measures the calcium level in your blood that helps diagnose a number of conditions such as pancreatitis, kidney disease and disease of the parathyroid gland. The Creatinine test measures the level of the waste product creatinine in your blood. Creatinine is a reliable indicator of kidney function and elevated creatinine levels may signify impaired kidney function or kidney disease. The Total Cholesterol Level is the overall amount of cholesterol found in your blood and consists of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol and high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol. The Triglyceride level test is a blood test that helps measure the amount of triglycerides in your blood. Triglycerides are a type of fat and high levels may raise the risk of coronary artery disease and stroke. The Iron (Fe) test checks for abnormally low or high blood iron levels and how well iron is metabolized. The Gamma-Glutamyl Transpeptidase (GGT) test measures the amount of the enzyme GGT in your blood and is used to detect diseases of the liver or bile ducts. The Total Serum Protein test assesses the total amount of protein present in the blood and measures the amounts of two major groups of proteins in the blood, globulin and albumin. The Glucose test measures the level of sugar in your blood and indicates how efficiently your body is metabolizing sugars.
